In a first-of-its-kind move in the Kenyan consumer insurance market, Britam General Insurance, Hotpoint Appliances, and MIC Global Risks have unveiled a point-of-sale “All-Risks” cover on selected home appliances, effective from the moment of purchase.
The partnership, announced on 14 November 2025, grants customers automatic insurance protection for 12 months, at no additional cost, for eligible appliances bought at Hotpoint’s nationwide outlets or via its online platform.
Under the new scheme, appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, televisions, selected audio devices, laundry machines, dishwashers, non-tabletop cookers, and room air conditioners are covered.
The policy is comprehensive. It insures against accidental damage, power surges, fire and water damage, transit loss (during delivery), theft and burglary, political violence and terrorism
To enhance customer trust, the scheme includes a repair-or-replace guarantee so that damaged appliances are either restored or replaced promptly.
At the point of sale, buyers receive a digital insurance certificate, and claims can be submitted via Britam’s online claims portal, streamlining the process.
The move comes at a time when Kenya’s household electronics market is seeing rapid growth. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2025 Economic Outlook, the appliance and consumer electronics sector is projected to grow by 11.4% in 2025, fueled by rising disposable income, urbanisation, and increased mortgage uptake.
For many consumers, appliances are no longer luxury items but essential parts of daily life, yet many do not bother to insure them. According to James Mbithi, CEO and Principal Officer of Britam General Insurance, embedding the cover at the point of sale helps bridge that gap.
“Most consumers do not proactively purchase insurance for their household appliances, yet these items are increasingly essential to day-to-day living. By embedding cover into the purchase journey … we are making protection accessible, seamless and relevant,” he said.
Ravi Kanani, CEO of Hotpoint Appliances, added that the partnership is part of Hotpoint’s commitment to delivering more than just high-quality products. He highlighted that the automatic, no-cost protection is a way to boost customer confidence long after the sale.
Meanwhile, Puneet Chawla, COO and Principal Officer of MIC Global Risks, pointed to innovation as a core driver: “This partnership … makes protection accessible and effortless, enabling customers to enjoy peace of mind from the moment they purchase their appliances.”
The move aligns with broader trends in Kenya’s insurance industry, especially the push toward embedded insurance, integrating coverage into everyday transactions. While insurance penetration in Kenya has historically lagged, innovations like this could help change that.
Embedded insurance reduces friction in buying cover, eliminates the need for separate enrollment, and offers protection that consumers may not have otherwise sought out. By capitalising on existing retail transactions, insurers like Britam make protection more inclusive and normalized.
Insurance regulators in Kenya have increasingly supported embedded and microinsurance products. The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has signaled openness toward innovative risk-transfer mechanisms that help deepen coverage.
For Britam, the partnership aligns with its strategic direction. The company has placed strong emphasis on digital-first, lifestyle-centred solutions, a point underscored by its executive leadership as part of its 2025 strategy.
The cover is automatically activated at the point of purchase, requiring no additional sign-up from the customer. It remains valid for 12 months, with buyers receiving a digital insurance certificate at checkout as proof of protection. In the event of damage or loss, claims can be filed easily through Britam’s digital claims portal, ensuring a seamless and convenient experience.
The insurance applies only to eligible appliances sold through Hotpoint outlets (both physical and online). There is a repair-or-replace guarantee in the policy.
As middle-class consumption grows, especially for household electronics, this partnership could serve as a model for further innovations; not just for Britam, Hotpoint, and MIC Global Risks, but across the Kenyan and broader African insurance market.
