In a move to bolster women’s health and financial resilience in Kenya, Britam has partnered with Healthy Entrepreneurs and Insurtech firm Inclusivity Solutions to scale the reach of its community-based insurance product, Malkia Hospicash. The initiative aims to empower over 300,000 households in underserved areas by integrating digital insurance with grassroots healthcare delivery.
The initiative, which leverages a network of more than 3,000 trained Community Health Entrepreneurs (CHEs), marks a significant advancement in how health and financial services are delivered to women and families across Kenya. These CHEs, supported by Healthy Entrepreneurs, will serve as the cornerstone of a national expansion plan to ensure that hard-to-reach communities receive both health education and access to affordable insurance coverage.
At the heart of the initiative is Malkia Hospicash, a wellness insurance cover designed specifically for women. With premiums starting as low as Ksh130, the plan includes a comprehensive suite of benefits:
A cancer cash benefit of Ksh200,000
A daily hospital payout of Ksh1,000 per night of hospitalisation
A last expense benefit of Ksh50,000
Telehealth support, including virtual consultations for both CHEs and their families
The product is aimed at bridging the health and economic gaps that disproportionately affect women, particularly in remote and underserved regions. By offering financial relief in times of illness and hospitalisation, the cover enables women to safeguard their families against health-related economic shocks.
“By embedding insurance into last mile health delivery systems, Britam is transforming how underserved communities access financial protection, making coverage more accessible, affordable, and relevant,” said Evah Kimani, Acting CEO of Britam Connect.
The program positions women as central figures in family healthcare decision-making, equipping them with the tools and support necessary to manage their health and that of their households. Through a holistic approach that combines telemedicine, financial protection, and community-based health education, Malkia Hospicash seeks to redefine women’s access to healthcare in Kenya.
Inclusivity Solutions, a leading inclusive Insurtech company, will power the digital platform that underpins the initiative, enabling a seamless customer experience from enrollment to claims processing. This digital backbone ensures that the product is both scalable and sustainable, providing timely support in moments of need.
Healthy Entrepreneurs, known for its extensive community-based healthcare delivery model, will mobilise its vast network of CHEs to offer this solution directly to households. These health workers are trusted members of their communities and are uniquely positioned to deliver both health education and insurance products in a culturally sensitive and locally informed manner.
The rollout of the Malkia Hospicash program will take place in two strategic phases:
Phase One will focus on covering the CHEs themselves, ensuring they have immediate access to the benefits while also serving as ambassadors for the product.
Phase Two will extend coverage to the households served by these CHEs, potentially reaching more than 300,000 homes in the first year alone.
This structured approach is designed to build trust, generate local buy-in, and ensure that the initiative has a measurable impact on both healthcare access and financial resilience.
Kenya, like many other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, continues to face significant disparities in women’s healthcare access, especially in rural areas. Many women are burdened with the dual responsibilities of caring for their families while navigating limited access to medical services and financial tools.
Malkia Hospicash aims to close this gap by meeting both the health and financial needs of women. The inclusion of annual health checks and community-based education further amplifies its impact, promoting preventative care and long-term wellness.
As public and private sectors look for innovative ways to deliver universal health coverage, the Malkia Hospicash model offers a replicable blueprint. It demonstrates how partnerships between insurers, health entrepreneurs, and technology providers can converge to create real change at the community level.
By placing women at the centre of healthcare innovation, Britam, Healthy Entrepreneurs, and Inclusivity Solutions are not only improving individual outcomes but also strengthening the broader healthcare ecosystem in Kenya.
