Mukuru and Travelex Form Strategic Alliance to Expand Cash Payout Network in South Africa.

Mukuru and Travelex have announced a strategic alliance to broaden cash payout options for remittance customers across South Africa, a move that promises enhanced accessibility, convenience and financial inclusion for individuals who depend on remittances for daily living expenses.

Under the partnership, customers sending money through Mukuru, a leading cross-border financial services platform, will now be able to collect their funds in cash at any of Travelex’s 46 branches nationwide.

These locations, strategically placed in high-traffic and easily accessible areas, aim to reduce travel time and congestion for recipients collecting remitted funds.

The expansion responds to long-standing challenges faced by many South African remittance recipients, particularly those in low-income or rural communities where digital access is limited and physical access to cash remains critical.

The broadened payout footprint enhances convenience and aims to ensure that financial support arrives where it is needed most.

The collaboration positions Travelex, a major player in foreign exchange and bureau de change services as an additional payout channel within the Mukuru network.

Customers will benefit from faster, reliable access to funds at trusted, regulated physical locations.

The strategic move also reflects the strength of South Africa’s Bureau de Change (BdC) regulatory framework, which underpins the alliance.

The BdC framework enforces strict compliance, robust liquidity requirements and secure Know-Your-Customer (KYC) procedures, enabling payout operators like Travelex to deliver services that are consistent with national financial regulations and international standards of safety.

By integrating Travelex’s physical network, Mukuru, which operates in more than 50 countries and serves millions of customers across Africa, Asia and Europe, diversifies its payout infrastructure and reduces reliance on single-channel solutions.

The amplified reach is expected to fortify resilience across its payout ecosystem.

“Mukuru has always focused on creating impactful financial solutions to improve our customers’ lives,” said Yemurai Chatapura, Commercial Manager for Remittances at Mukuru, in a statement.

“This partnership extends that reach while upholding high standards of security, compliance and service.”

Marlize Van Der Schyff, Financial Director at Travelex, emphasized the complementary strengths of the two organizations, describing the alliance as a natural alignment.

“Together, we’ll bring customers a more powerful, seamless and future-ready experience,” she said.

The partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to accessible, inclusive financial services, addressing barriers that have historically impeded cash payout accessibility in remittance-dependent communities.

South Africa is a significant hub for remittance flows within the Southern African region, hosting large diasporas who send money across borders to support families and households.

Expanded cash payout access is particularly relevant in areas where beneficiaries may lack bank accounts, digital wallets or stable internet connectivity.

In recent years, fintech partnerships like this have emerged as pivotal mechanisms to bridge gaps in traditional financial ecosystems by combining digital platforms with physical access points.

Mukuru’s existing partnerships, including initiatives to integrate cash payments with e-commerce services, reinforce its role in driving innovative financial solutions that meet diverse customer needs.

For many customers, the ability to collect remittances in cash remains essential due to factors such as limited bank penetration, preference for cash transactions and the high cost of digital financial services in some regions.

The extended network through Travelex’s branches, including offices in major transit points such as OR Tambo and Cape Town International Airports, supports greater convenience and choice for recipients.

The alliance aligns with broader efforts to strengthen financial inclusion across Africa’s formal financial sector and to support internationally mobile populations reliant on remittances.

By enhancing the payout infrastructure, Mukuru and Travelex anticipate not only smoother cash collection but also increased customer confidence in regulated, compliant financial services.

As remittance volumes continue to grow globally, and particularly within key corridors in Africa, strategic collaborations that expand physical and digital payout channels are expected to play a central role in shaping future financial ecosystems.
