Qatar Airways & Kenya Airways Launch Strategic Codeshare Partnership to Boost Africa Connectivity.

In a decisive move to strengthen air links between the Middle East and East Africa, Qatar Airways and Kenya Airways have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signalling a comprehensive codeshare partnership anchored on expanded frequencies, deeper service collaboration, and enhanced connectivity.

Announced on Tuesday in Doha, the agreement outlines Qatar Airways’ launch of a third daily flight between Doha’s acclaimed Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), operated in codeshare with Kenya Airways. Tickets are expected to become available within days as both partners market the route jointly.

Complementing this route, the partnership introduces a new codeshare service from Kenya Airways on the Mombasa–Doha route during the upcoming winter season. This expansion further deepens traveller access across continents.

The Qatar Kenya airlines partnership extends far beyond seat numbers. Both airlines have committed to collaboration across a wide range of areas, including Cargo operations, Airport and ground-handling services, Product and service development, Loyalty programme alignment, Joint procurement, Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO)

These initiatives reflect ambitions for a truly integrated partnership, elevating operational efficiency and fostering shared growth.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al‑Meer described the move as a milestone in Qatar Airways’ expanding Africa strategy, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Doha–Nairobi flights. He emphasised that the alliance with Kenya Airways aligns with Qatar’s record of strategic investments throughout the continent, citing its involvement in Airlink and interest in RwandAir.

Echoing that sentiment, Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka revealed that the partnership aligns seamlessly with the airline’s broader “turnaround strategy”, marking its first year‑to‑profit in over a decade earlier this year. He highlighted the pact’s potential to stimulate both tourism and air cargo, vital contributors to Kenya’s economic resurgence.

Both carriers carry strong industry accolades. Kenya Airways holds the title of Africa’s Leading Airline and Business Class for the fourth successive year, validating its standing in regional aviation. Qatar Airways, recognized by Skytrax as the World’s Best Airline (2025) and a five‑star carrier, operates over 170 weekly flights to 30 African cities via Doha.

The expansion adds valuable capacity to one of Africa’s busiest long‑haul routes and extends options for travellers between East Africa and Europe, Asia, and North America via Doha. Qatar Airways has recently enhanced connections from Africa to major hubs such as Brussels, London, Guangzhou, New York, and Washington.

For Kenya, the Mombasa–Doha link offers a direct gateway not only to Gulf leisure and business destinations but also broadens its footprint in international cargo markets—from East Africa’s coastal corridor to global consumer hubs.

Kenya Airways’ revitalised profitability model, combined with Qatar Airways’ global network and premium brand, promises a strong boost to Kenya’s $5 bn aviation and tourism sectors. The partnership’s focus on cargo integration also offers Kenyan exporters enhanced access to lucrative markets, particularly perishable goods.

This expanded collaboration reinforces Qatar Airways’ continued outreach in Africa, augmenting its 25 % stake in South Africa’s Airlink and prospective investment in RwandAir.

From Kenya’s perspective, the tie‑up with Qatar strengthens its global alliances—Kenya Airways is currently Africa’s only member of SkyTeam—but this joint venture may even outpace regional rivalries for market share and connectivity.

Passenger experience is expected to benefit from shared loyalty schemes, lounge access, co‑branded products, and streamlined service reforms across both airlines’ hubs. The Qatar Kenya airlines partnership may also accelerate infrastructural and training investments, particularly in Mombasa.
