Safaricom Expands Financial Literacy Training to Migori Businesses.

Safaricom’s ongoing ‘Shine Kenya, Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa’ initiative has reached Migori County, providing financial literacy training to local businesses in partnership with Google. As part of the company’s broader social impact agenda, the program aims to equip entrepreneurs with essential skills for business growth and financial management.

The training saw over 300 boda boda riders, vendors, and small business operators, including shopkeepers in Rongo, Migori County empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their finances wisely.

The program is part of the ongoing “Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa” campaign, which rewards customers for their purchases. Safaricom seeks to foster economic empowerment by equipping business owners with essential skills to navigate challenges in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

“Empowering our community through knowledge is a vital step towards a sustainable business. Today, we’ve proudly facilitated free digital and financial literacy training to over 300 of our customers from diverse sectors. By equipping them with essential skills, we are not only enhancing their ability to make informed decisions but also driving long-term economic empowerment.’’ said Peter Ndegwa, CEO Safaricom PLC.

Participants receive tailored sessions on budgeting, record-keeping, and digital payment solutions. Launched alongside a customer promotion, Safaricom’s efforts reflect its commitment to empowering SMEs, addressing critical gaps in financial education, and bolstering local economies across Kenya.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to transforming lives through meaningful, strategic investments that uplift communities and contribute to a brighter, more inclusive future for all Kenyans,” Ndegwa added.

The training is part of a series of community engagement drive by Safaricom in Migori county to celebrate Kepher Okoth, the grand prize winner in the just concluded Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa promotion.

Okoth, a 24-year-old mechanic from Kanga in Migori county, was awarded KES 5 million last week, along with an additional KES 1 million to support a community project of his choice through the Safaricom Foundation.

The program has garnered positive feedback from attendees, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enhance their financial acumen. Many participants noted that the insights gained from the training will enable them to better navigate the challenges posed by the current economic landscape.

“A big thanks to Safaricom and Google for providing us with this free training on digital and financial literacy. As boda boda riders, managing money has always been a challenge, many of us earn but don’t know how to invest or save. Today’s training is a real eye-opener for many of us. Now, we have the tools to spend wisely and invest our money for a better future,” said Wilberforce Midianga Boda Boda Chairman, Migori County.

Other community engagements planned for Migori County include a medical camp and a fistula camp for residents, hospital visits, and the distribution of mama packs to new mothers. Additionally, the renovation of Kitere Primary School in Kanga, sponsored by Kepher Okoth, is set to enhance educational facilities in the area.

This school renovation is part of 31 community projects funded through the “Shine Kenya, Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa” promotion. Designed by Safaricom, this initiative not only rewards and celebrates customers with daily and weekly cash prizes but also supports key community projects selected by the winners.

In addition to the training, the “Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa” promotion offers a chance for customers to win prizes by participating in various activities, a strategy designed to encourage more engagement with Safaricom’s products and services.

During the campaign, Safaricom rewarded 30 Kenyans with KES 1M each weekly and 2.52 million others with M-PESA cashbacks, data bundles and airtime. Currently, the 31 community projects chosen by weekly winners are being implemented.
